Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Celebrates Founders Day

The great niece of Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority founder Ethel Hedgeman was in Memphis Saturday to host the group’s annual Founders Day observance.

AKA was the very first all-black sorority when Hedgeman founded it, and Reverend Doctor Robin Hedgeman spoke with the ladies at Mississippi Boulevard Christian Church in midtown about carrying on that legacy.

This weekend marked the 109th Founders Day celebration for the sorority, and members of the Beta Epsilon Omega and Phi Lamda Omega chapters were invited to take part.

“We are a sisterhood of legacy and service, so we give back to the community,” says Wendy Kirkendol. “That is our main focus, is to ensure that we are re-instilling to the community what we are pouring out.”

This weekend was about more than networking. Alpha Kappa Alpha is also packing one million backpacks for kids across the country. All the items collected Saturday will count towards that total, before being handed out to Shelby County kids in need.
