MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Memphis Police Department Chief Cerelyn "CJ" Davis told City Council members that there have been arrests made in relation to the Orange Mound shooting, but not for the acts of that day.
"The arrests that we've made in the Orange Mound shootings could not be, and I don't want to get too deep into the investigation ... are for other charges [on] individuals that we believe were involved in the Orange Mound shooting," Davis said.
"But we weren't able to charge them for the shooting. We know those individuals were there but we had other causes to arrest them for other reasons and other cases as well.
David reiterated she would not get too deep into the investigation during the council meeting, but said there would are additional individuals before being cut off by council member Jerri Green who asked for updates.
Regular updates on that shooting and other cases have been scheduled by MPD, Davis said.
Green asked for the next time MPD was at the council, if there could be an update on the case, as well as on arrest numbers for reckless driving and drag racing.
"We have some great leads," Davis said.
Memphis Police said the shooting happened at a block party held without a permit at Orange Mound Park shortly after 7 p.m. Saturday, April 20, 2024, and as many as 300 people were in attendance.
Two individuals were killed during the shooting, seven others were injured.
Originally, Memphis Police Chief CJ Davis said that there was a total of 16 victims, but MPD later issued a correction saying nine people were shot. They said the error likely happened because several victims were reported multiple times.
