SHELBY COUNTY, Tenn. — The Shelby County Sheriff's Office (SCSO) is offering an active shooter response course Saturday, March 23, for pastors and security team leaders at churches, aiming to provide them with a plan for surviving active shooter events.

The "Civilian Response to Active Shooter Events" will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the SCSO Training Academy at 993 Dovecrest in Memphis.

Attendees will receive hands-on training. Civilian response options, medical issues and considerations for conducting drills will also be discussed at the academy. The history and prevalence of active shooter events will be explained as well.

SCSO, who is coordinating the course with the Tennessee Office of Homeland Security, said Saturday's event is already at maximum capacity with 72 people, but the same course will be held in the near future.

“Training is the cornerstone of safeguarding our houses of worship, forging a shield of preparedness and security of every worshipper,” Shelby County Sheriff Floyd Bonner Jr. said in the press release.

Those interested in attending the course should contact Sgt. Terry Love at terry.love@shelby-sheriff.org.
