City pools delayed opening until June 8 due to mechanical testing, Memphis Parks says

Memphis Parks reportedly decided to delay the opening of eight different pools to allow testing of mechanical systems.

City pools are being delayed until June 8, according to Memphis Parks and the City of Memphis.

Memphis Parks reportedly decided to delay the opening of eight different pools to allow testing of mechanical systems.

This move comes "out of an abundance of caution and to ensure the safety" for their patrons, they said.

ABC24 captured footage of the pool at Gooch Park in North Memphis during the second consecutive summer that pools in Memphis have experienced delayed openings.

Memphis Parks Director Nick Walker said there are several challenges ahead of opening the pools.

"Safety is two things — one, do we have the staff to operate it and two, are we 100% comfortable with everything from a mechanical standpoint," Walker said. "We need to pause, and we need to take a week to make sure that all the filtration systems; all of the pumps, all of the equipment is ready to go," Walker said.

City crews plan to test pool water during the week of June 2. Those tests will determine if any of the pools will open as previously planned.
