Orange Mound Blight Patrol hosting community cleanup

ABC24 speaks with Warren Banner and Esther Jones, co-captains of the Orange Mound Blight Patrol, who are tackling blight in their neighborhood.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The non-profit Orange Mound Blight Patrol is hosting a community cleanup to help tackle blight in their neighborhood.

"People in the community...will call us and let us know if they got a lot of trash in the area, and we will go and clean up that area," said Esther Jones, co-captain of Orange Mound Blight Patrol.

Jones also said the non-profit has connections with City Councilwoman Jana Swearengen-Washington, who will send crews to clean up blight when the organization informs her about it.

"I love what I do for our community...We can't go out into other neighborhoods and talk about [them]; we have to think of our own," said co-captain Warren Banner, who is also a part of the non-profit Guns Down in Orange Mound.

Jones said they are always looking for volunteers to come out and help beautify the neighborhood.

"It's a historical neighborhood," Jones said. "When you look back at what our ancestors did for this neighborhood, they deserve...for us to keep it up and everything...Our children shouldn't have to go to another neighborhood to realize things are beautiful. Our neighborhood is beautiful."

The community clean-up will take place at 1461 Pendleton Ave. on Saturday, Aug. 24 from 9 to 11 a.m. You can RSVP by contacting 901-340-3318.
