About 100 locks broken on cell doors at Shelby County Jail

The Shelby County Sheriff’s Office told ABC24 about 100 locks on cell doors are broken and not working properly.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The Shelby County Jail is now dealing with broken locks on jail cell doors at 201 Poplar.

The Shelby County Sheriff’s Office told ABC24 about 100 locks on cell doors are broken and not working properly. A spokesperson said some of the locks were vandalized by inmates, and others “mechanically failed due to time and age.”

Recently, the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office said it was down hundreds of correction deputies at its three county locations, including the downtown jail, where over the weekend authorities said inmates started several fires and barricaded themselves in a housing unit.

The sheriff’s office said the Shelby County Commission approved emergency funds to pay to fix the doors, and the parts have been ordered.
