Brutal fight at Central High School caught on camera

A brutal school fight caught on camera in a Shelby County school is going viral. Now a mother blames the district for not protecting her daughter.

MEMPHIs, Tenn. (localmemphis.com) – A brutal school fight caught on camera in a Shelby County school is going viral. Now a mother blames the district for not protecting her daughter.

Geraldine Lewis says fights at Central High School are getting out of hand. She says her daughter could have been seriously injured and doesn’t believe she should have been reprimanded.

A student posted the fight video on Facebook. We’ve blurred it to protect students’ identities. A mother of one of the teens says she’s disgusted it went on for so long and that her daughter has been a victim of bullying at the school.

“I’m very angry. I was saddened to see that my daughter is humiliated,” said Geraldine Lewis, whose daughter was involved in a school fight.

Fighting back tears, Lewis explains her frustration after seeing video of her daughters and another teenage girl fighting at Central High School. Lewis claims the fight stemmed from cliques formed in school, and her daughter was not the aggressor.

“The groups split into 4 and 4 so my daughter was pretty much neutral and the girl was upset and said that my daughter was playing both sides,” said Lewis.

Lewis is upset school security didn’t step in sooner; however, SCS says a staff member attempted to intervene until school officers from another area of the building stepped in.

“I think they should have more security, more hall monitors. They have deputy sheriffs there who are armed, but as you can see no one protected my child,” Lewis said.

A spokesperson from Shelby County Schools says several students have been disciplined for their involvement in the fight, and violent behaviors like this will never be tolerated. But Lewis says that’s not enough as she showed us pictures of her daughter’s injuries.

“It’s too many issues. The principal even admitted they had three fights in one day. My daughter’s head was right by the steps. I lost a child in 2007. I can’t bear to lose another child for something as small and petty as this,” said Lewis.
