Burn ban in effect for several Mississippi counties

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The Mississippi Forestry Commission (MFC) reports that 16 Mississippi counties are currently under active burn bans. Burn bans are restrictions on outdoor burning during drought or wildfire conditions. 

During a burn ban, anything with an open flame that produces an ember is not allowed.  MFC urges the public to be very careful when starting outdoor fires, as even a small spark can start a wildfire.

  • Benton County
    • Start Date: 9/4/2024
    • Through End Date: 10/4/2024
    • Exemptions: 1, 2 & 4
  • Lafayette County
    • Start Date: 9/4/2024
    • Through End Date: 9/17/2024
    • Exemptions: 1
  • Tippah County
    • Start Date: 8/28/2024
    • Through End Date: 9/28/2024
    • Exemptions: 1, 2 & 4
  • Alcorn County
    • Start Date: 8/27/2024
    • Through End Date: 9/27/2024
    • Exemptions: 1-5

All burn bans expire at midnight on the stated date of expiration.

Each time a burn ban is issued, it will list either “No Exemptions” or one or more exemptions that can be referenced below.

  1. Mississippi Forestry Commission
  2. Certified Burn Managers
  3. County Fire Services
  4. Commercial contractors with heavy construction equipment, providing that said burn meets Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ) regulations. 
  5. Agricultural field burn
  6. Other
