Byhalia, MS police are following up after a deadly double shooting early Sunday morning.
Authorities said it’s the first homicide within town limits in decades.
Because homicides are so rare, Byhalia officers criscrossed the community Sunday – where residents are rattled after an argument led to gunfire.
Police said two 23-year-olds – Quintin Sanders and Cody Howard – got into a fight and shot each other at the Broadmoor Apartments on Oak Street.
Sanders later died and Howard is recovering at the hospital.
Byhalia PD Detective Gary Reid spent the day working his first homicide investigation since joining the department in 2009.
“Very rare,” Detective Reid said. “The community right now is very shocked.”
Police said Howard – who authorities said was friends with Sanders for years – may not face charges if its determined he acted in self-defense.
“Right now we’ve been unable to piece together exactly why this has taken place,” Detective Reid said.
“At this time the community needs to know that this is still a safe community, that situations like this are isolated here,” Detective Reid said. “This is an isolated event.”
Police said neither of the men lived at the apartment complex.
