Renters say they’ve lived with multiple sewage leaks and piles of garbage for months at South Memphis apartment complex

There are at least three separate spots with large puddles of sewage, two spots with water actively shooting up from the ground and piles of garbage throughout

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — On Sunday, a concerned community member posted video to Facebook showing tenants surrounded by filth at a South Memphis apartment complex, including piles of trash around dumpsters, huge potholes and multiple pipes leaking sewage.

“This is my daily view every day — I come out and they expect somebody to pay almost $1,000 in rent for this,” said Mack Mathews, who moved in July 2023.

Two other renters ABC24 spoke with at Cane Creek Apartments said problems like overflowing sewage, piles of garbage and mold inside their rooms have been going on anywhere from four months to a year.

“I done made complaints, I done called, I sent in letters,” Mathews said.

He said he is tired of living somewhere covered in thick layers of sewage and waste. There are also several areas where water is actively leaking up from the ground.

And the smell?

“It’s bad,” Mathews said. “It’s really bad.”

Before ABC24 could speak with anymore tenants, someone claiming to be with the apartment complex told the news crew they were trespassing and had to leave the property.

Still there was plenty visible to cameras outside of the apartment building, such as a drainage pond full of tires and even more garbage.

Mathews said most of the apartment maintenance goes to the vacant units so that more people can move in.

“The most we’ve had is someone probably done come over and fix the leak down there like a month ago,” he said, pointing to the other end of the property. “Other than that — nothing.”

Mathews said he plans on moving out in July and know several of his neighbors who have similar plans.

“Do not move over here,” he warned.

ABC24 asked workers in the complex's property office for a response to these claims and they responded with “No comment.”

Memphis Code Enforcement told ABC24 they had two previous calls involving Cane Creek Apartments in 2023 and they will be inspecting the property again on Tuesday.
