A convicted murderer in Arkansas who police say tried to kill someone else is in jail as of Wednesday.
Helena-West Helena Police says authorities with Arkansas Department of Corrections arrested Andre Ewing outside of Elaine, Arkansas. He was wanted for shooting a man during a fight over a woman. The victim, David Clark III is in stable condition at Regional One in Memphis.
Police and emergency crews were dispatched to the A-Z Food Mart on Sebastian and North Second Street 4:08 p.m. Chief Virgil Green says Ewing shot Clark in the neck.
“One guy was over here on this side they had picked him up, the ambulance had taken him to the hospital. I didn’t know actually what was going on,” said Roy Spann of Helena-West Helena.
Chief Virgil Green says the shooting started after Ewing and Clark started arguing over a girl.
“It’s senseless it’s senseless because the fact of the matter no one is gaining anything. Everybody is losing it’s a lose-lose situation,” Spann explained.
A bullet from the shooting went through the window of a home across the street. Local 24 News spoke to the homeowner’s son who did not want to show his face out of fear of his family’s safety.
“We need basically our city leaders to really look at what is taking place in our city and our town and try to come up with some type of resolution,” said one resident of Helena-West Helena.
In 2002, a judge sentenced Ewing to 20 years for second-degree murder. He was convicted of killing someone after a convenience store shooting. Ewing was suppose to meet with his parole officer Tuesday, but he never showed up.
Ewing will have to return to the Arkansas Department of Corrections because he violated his parole. Chief Green says he can make his first court appearance as early as Friday.
