Car explodes after catching fire, engulfs garage in flames in Southeast Shelby County

Shelby County Fire said a family of 10 was living at the house, and all were able to get out uninjured.

SHELBY COUNTY, Tenn. — A family of 10 is safe after their house garage burst into flames on Thanksgiving Day, and Shelby County Fire said it all happened after their car caught fire and exploded.

According to Shelby County Fire Department, their firefighters responded to the house fire call at the 4900 block of Harvest Fields Circle just after 3:30 p.m. Thursday.

They arrived to find the garage of the house fully engulfed in flame and heavy smoke. 

About 30 minutes into the firefighting effort, Shelby County Fire gave the order to evacuate the house as heavy fire and smoke persisted. 

Shelby County Fire said their initial information suggests a light was knocked over in the garage, catching a car on fire, which then exploded and engulfed the garage in flame. The fire department said a family of 10 lived at the house, and all were able to get out uninjured. 

No firefighters were injured in the blaze.
