Collierville assistant chief Jeff Abeln passes away

Officials announced the 37-year veteran officer passed at St. Francis Hospital.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Collierville officials announced the passing of assistant police chief Jeff Abeln.

A 37-year veteran of the Collierville Police Department, Abeln died at St. Francis hospital Oct. 14, 2024.

“Assistant Chief Abeln gave over 37 years of honorable service to the Town of Collierville," CPD Chief Dale Lane said in a release. "He was a vital part of our CPD family and modeled what it meant to be a professional police officer. Jeff was a loving husband, proud father, and a loyal friend to many. We are all better because of his influence. Our prayers are with the Abeln Family."

Abeln contributed time and talents to numerous local organizations, including serving on the Main Street Collierville Board of Trustees, the Town’s Environmental and Town Beautiful Commissions, and leading Leadership Collierville as President of its Board of Trustees, according to officials.

"His legacy is etched into the fabric of our community, not only in the accomplishments of his distinguished career but in the personal connections he made and the lives he touched," a release said. "We ask that the community keep the Abeln family and the Collierville Police Department in their thoughts during this difficult time."

A cause of death was not immediately shared.
