MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A Collierville Police officer severely injured in the line of duty after he was run over by a car during a September, 2022, chase is back to full duty, according to the department.
CPD said Officer Michael Magnuson was critically injured on Sept. 24, 2022, when he was confronting a suspect from an earlier shooting in Shelby County.
The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI) said the suspect, later identified as Keith Houston, drove at Officer Magnuson with a Chevrolet Corvette, and the officer was hit, forced onto the hood, and later run over, sustaining severe injuries. The TBI reported Houston was in custody later that day, charged with attempted murder.
CPD said Magnuson spent 38 days in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), 11 days in hospital rehabilitation, and has gone through 19 surgeries and 13 months of physical therapy.
“Officer Magnuson is a walking miracle and his recovery is an answer to prayers. His determination, positive attitude, and devotion to service represents the best of our CPD family," said Chief Dale Lane.
In November, Officer Magnuson was awarded a Purple Heart. Collierville Police said the Purple Heart is awarded to an officer who sustains a serious injury in the line of duty because of an act of malice or recklessness of another.
“Officer Magnuson expresses gratitude to Officer Gallo and Officer Ware, the firefighters and paramedics on duty at Collierville Fire Department Station 5 on the night in question. Additionally, thanks are extended to the ICU staff at Regional One, Dr. Throckmorton, and appreciation is conveyed to Kelsey and Jamie at Campbell Clinic,” said the CPD post to social media.
