Congressman Steve Cohen easily won the democratic primary Thursday for U.S. House District 9. He has held seat since 2007.
The entire district is located within Shelby County, and includes most of the city of Memphis.
Three democrats challenged Cohen for the seat – Justin Ford, Larry Crim, and M. Latroy Williams.
Cohen will face republican Wayne Alberson in the November general election.
The first time congressman Cohen ran for the seat, he lost in the primary to Harold Ford, Junior. In 2006, Cohen easily won the seat with 60% of the vote. Each re-election, the congressman has won by more than 70% in the largely African-American district.
“It shows that Memphis has come a long way at least when they know there’s a politician when race isn’t an issue,” says Cohen. ”As long as, African Americans are no different than Caucasian folks. They look for somebody who services the constituency, provides good constituent services and bring home the bacon. If you can vote right, represent people, go out and see them, listen to them, do the job, they’ll vote for you no matter what your race is or your religion.”
Cohen said is he eager to continue his work for Memphians.
