It’s all the talk among Memphis Tigers fans. Speculation is growing about replacing University of Memphis basketball coach, Tubby Smith. If rumors are true, former NBA star, and now East High School basketball coach, Penny Hardaway, could become the new head basketball coach for the Memphis Tigers.
Our sports director here at Local 24, Doc Holliday, says many of his sources are telling him Hardaway will be the next head coach. However, it wouldn’t be a cheap switch.
It would cost the University of Memphis nearly $10 million to get rid of Tubby.
Why? Well that’s what Tubby has left on his contract. The University would have six years to pay that money.
There are mixed reviews from the public on how Tubby has been as the coach for the Memphis Tigers, but Tubby understands at the end of the day this is a business decision.
“Well nothing’s fair in life as far as I tell them, hey things happen to the best, you know things happen you know it’s life, that’s what, life’s not fair to anyone. So, we uh, we understand that. We just do our job the best we can and go from there.” says Smith.
Despite the possible coaching switch, the Tigers still have to focus on the AAC Tournament. The Tigers face South Florida Thursday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. in Orlando.
