MEMPHIS, Tenn — On Monday, the Memphis NAACP chapter requested the courts keep former inmate Courtney Anderson out of jail.
Anderson, 55, was released from jail in 2022 after he was sentenced to 162 years, 11 months and 29 days in 2000 for theft and forgery, both non-violent crimes. However, the Tennessee Appeals Court ordered him back to prison, claiming the judge who reversed the original decision did not have the authority to do so.
The NAACP is also calling on Governor Bill Lee to grant Anderson clemency. Lee has not responded to requests for comment on this case.
