Second inmate back in custody after walking away from working party in January in DeSoto County

The DeSoto County Sheriff said deputies also arrested and charged a woman for helping the two inmates escape from a working party.

DESOTO COUNTY, Miss — A second man is now back in custody after both inmates walked away from a working party in January in DeSoto County, authorities said.

The Shelby County Sheriff's Office said Monday, Feb. 5, 2024, that Gene Dewayne Saulsberry was found at a home in the area of Dupre St. and Clarke Rd. in Hickory Hill. They said he was taken into custody without incident and charged with escape.

Deputies from the Shelby County and DeSoto County sheriff's offices found the other inmate, Moumen Mawlawi, around 10 p.m., Jan. 23, at a hotel in the area of American Way and South Perkins Road in Memphis. He was taken into custody without incident.

DeSoto County Sheriff Thomas Tuggle said a woman, Asya Gardner, was arrested after he said she helped the two inmates escape from a minimum-security working party at a DeSoto County non-profit earlier that morning. Gardner, Mawlawi's girlfriend, has been charged with aiding escape of felons.

Mawlawi had been arrested for auto theft, while Saulsberry was arrested for shoplifting, and Tuggle said both are non-violent offenders.

Tuggle said the two were helping out at a non-profit food bank in DeSoto County when they walked off of the job.
