DeSoto County Shooting Victim ‘Thankful To Be Alive’

A DeSoto County man has extra reason to be thankful this Thanksgiving. He’s thankful to be alive.

Jimmie Conner was one of four people shot last night at a home in the 900 block of Cross Road off Vaiden Road in Olive Branch.

DeSoto County authorities arrested Keatron Walls who witnesses say had an on again off again relationship with the woman inside the home.

Friends of these victims and the DeSoto County sheriff both say these shooting victims are recovering but are expected to be ok.

In an exclusive interview, one of those shooting victims told me he’s extra thankful and thoughtful today as a flurry of bullets spared his life and the lives of his friends.

“I’m just thankful I get to see another day. The Lord has blessed me, and to me, this is a wakeup call.”

Jimmie Conner’s bandage is still fresh hours after bullet fragments sliced into his leg and upper thigh, dangerously close to an important artery.

Conner said he was sitting on a couch inside the home watching basketball with a group when a gunman opened fire outside, leaving nearly a dozen bullet holes.

“After the first three or four shots, I just immediately hit the floor on top of everybody else,” recalled Conner.

The shots startled this neighbor close by.

“It’s scary, real scary, something like that.”

Last night, DeSoto County authorities tracked down and arrested the man they say pulled the trigger, 31-year-old Keatron Walls.

DeSoto County Sheriff Bill Rasco said Walls had some kind of an estranged relationship with a woman inside the home who wasn’t hit.

“Very thankful. There needs to be more like him locked up,” said Conner.

And as Conner eats turkey with his family today, the 57-year-old wears his hospital bracelet, a constant reminder of what could have happened but didn’t.

“You hear it on the news all the time happening to someone else but you never think it could happen to you.”

Walls is charged with four counts of aggravated assault and one count of shooting into an occupied dwelling. He’s in the DeSoto County Jail on a $2.5 million bond.
