There’s new information about a popular restaurant chain planning to open on Beale Street. About a year ago, Wahlburgers announced it would be opening on the east end of the street. A company representative says despite running months behind schedule, the eatery will open its doors this fall.
Wahlburgers is a gourmet burger restaurant founded by well-known actor Mark Wahlberg and his brothers, including singer and actor Donnie Wahlberg.
Lou Winston owns the bar and grill next door and has faith Wahlburgers eventually will open up here.
“Yeah they are coming. I truly believe that if the Downtown Memphis Commission said they are coming, they are coming.” said Winston.
A company spokesperson told Local Memphis the restaurant should have been open by now but a problem with the pipes connecting to the sewer system caused the delay. Now that it is fixed, all the plumbing inside has to be replaced.
The delay is just the latest for the location. In 2014, another restaurant, Sweetie Pies, announced it was coming to Beale. The project stalled after a dispute with the landlord over improvements and it never opened.
The store front next door to Winston has been vacant for almost two decades.
“I used to depend on Sweetie Pies and Wahlburgers. Ya’ know what, now I just depend on me and we hustling down on this end, we really do,” said Winston.
Winston only hopes Wahlburgers will finally open this fall.
“Ya’ know what? Summer takes care of itself, to have them come in during the fall and have a grand opening and all that, that just gonna boost up the business on this end of the street,” said Winston.
