Fayette County Industrial Development Board tentatively approves tax incentive for Buc-ee’s

Buc-ee's plans to build a new store off Interstate 40 at mile marker 28 near Gallaway, Tennessee.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The Fayette County Industrial Development Board has tentatively approved a tax incentive for Buc-ee’s to build a new store near Gallaway, Tennessee.

Buc-ee's plans to build a new store off Interstate 40 at mile marker 28 near Gallaway. That’s about 40 minutes northeast of Memphis. The travel center superstore is known for its clean restrooms, food, and lots of merchandise.

The company asked for an incentive to help offset the cost of building the infrastructure, roads, water and sewer to the tune of $17 million.

Buc-ee's would be both the lender and the builder for the gas station. In order to get the tax incentive, the Fayette County board wants Buc-ee’s management to make an amendment to the contract with the county which would allow county leaders to sign off on any other changes made to the deal.

This will be the first Greater Memphis-area Buc-ee's and is slated to open in 2026. Currently, Buc-ee’s has two locations in Tennessee, both in the eastern part of the state.

According to an April social media post from Tennessee State Senator Page Walley, starting wages for Buc-ee’s employees run $17-$19 per hour plus benefits. Each center employees 175 to 250 full-time workers.

The company says on average 4,000 to 8,000 cars visit a store daily, 100,000 people visit weekly, and more than 5,200,000 people visit each year. They said 80% of visitors come from outside the county, and 50% of visitors come from outside of the state. The company says its stores average more than $50,000,000 annual gross taxable sales.
