More than 5,200 Tennessee households received federal assistance to recover from Hurricane Helene

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Millions of federal dollars have passed through East Tennessee, helping communities pick up the pieces in the wake of Hurricane Helene.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency said Friday that it approved more than $18.9 million in assistance for East Tennessee counties impacted by the storm. Those include Carter, Cocke, Greene, Hamblen, Hawkins, Johnson, Unicoi and Washington counties.

The agency also said it has helped 5,207 East Tennessee households recover from the hurricane. It approved more than $9.1 million in housing assistance so people in the impacted areas could have a place to stay after the storm. It also approved more than $9.6 million in other needs, including $4.3 million for "Serious Needs Assistance."

That type of assistance includes supplies like water, first aid, breastfeeding supplies, infant formula, diapers, hygiene items or fuel for transportation.

Anyone in East Tennessee who needs help recovering from Hurricane Helene can find help at any of FEMA's disaster recovery centers. It set up seven centers, listed below

  • Carter: 1749 Highway 19 East, Elizabethton, TN 37643
  • Cocke: Cocke County Recreation Department, 466 Learning Road Way, Newport, TN 37821
  • Greene: Greene County Courthouse Annex, 204 North Cutler Street, Greeneville, TN 37745
  • Hamblen: Utility Commission Conference and Training Center, 441 Main Street, Morristown, TN 37814
  • Johnson: Tennessee National Guard Armory, 1923 South Shady Street, Mountain City, TN 37683
  • Unicoi: National Guard Armory/Unicoi Emergency Operations Center, 615 South Main Avenue, Erwin, TN 37650
  • Washington: Cherry Grove Baptist Church, 104 Cherry Grove Road, Jonesborough, TN

Most centers are open from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Mondays through Saturdays and are closed on Sundays.
