Fire that burned down strip mall in southwest Memphis caused by arson, fire department says

The fire was reported Friday, May 31, 2024, around 5:45 a.m. in the area of West Holmes Road and S. Third Street.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A person set fire to a strip mall Friday morning in southwest Memphis, causing the building to burn down, according to fire officials.

The fire was reported May 31, 2024, around 5:45 a.m. in the area of West Holmes Road and S. Third Street. The Memphis Fire Department (MFD) said the fire broke out at a strip mall with three businesses, including Hawkins Bike Club. The other two businesses are no longer running. 

Despite fire fighters' efforts, the fire destroyed much of the building. Later, MFD said arson caused the fire and a suspect had not yet been detained.

No injuries were reported, according to investigators.
