MEMPHIS, Tenn. — One person was taken to the hospital as Memphis firefighters battled heavy smoke and flames early Wednesday morning at an apartment in Midtown.
MFD said they responded to a reported house fire about 2:50 a.m. Aug. 21, 2024, in the 100 block of North Montgomery, between Poplar Ave. and Jefferson Ave. When an ABC24 photographer arrived at the scene about 4 a.m., he saw flames a building. Thick smoke could even be seen blowing across Interstate 240 and parts of Poplar Avenue.
Witnesses said the structure is an old home that was turned into apartments.
MFD investigators said the fire started in one of the apartments on the second floor. They said it was due to a space heater that had been placed too close to other items which caught fire.
MFD said one man in the apartment that caught fire was taken to Regional One Burn Center after sustaining smoke inhalation. They said he was not burned.
Investigators said several rooms on the first and second floors had smoke, fire, and water damage. Damages for the building were estimated at $227,000 and the loss of contents was estimated at $110,000.
