A homegoing celebration for civil rights icon, Reverend Samuel Billy Kyles, was held after he passed away last Tuesday.
Saturday morning, loved ones gathered at his home church for a final farewell.
His funeral was held at monumental Baptist church, the church he pastored for 55 years.
Reverend Kyles was best known as the man who was just feet away from his friend, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr when he was assassinated at the Lorraine Motel in 1968.
Rev. Kyles also fought segregation in Memphis’ public bus system and public schools.
But many friends and family wanted to take the time to remember Billy Kyles the man.
“This is supposed to be solemn, but when you know a neighbor and friend the way I knew Reverend Billy, it’s hard to be solemn, because I saw that side of him that sweet, sweet spirit,” said AC Wharton.
Today’s homegoing celebration wraps up three days of events celebrating the life of Rev. Kyles.
Rev. Kyles was 81-years-old.
