Funeral services for woman killed at Shelby Farms Park announced

Ellie Young is survived by her loving parents, and a wide circle of friends and family who cherished her.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Funeral services for Ellie Young, the 22-year-old who was killed at Shelby Farms Park, have been announced.

According to Halls Funeral Home, Inc., visitation will take place from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Friday, October 25, at Ripley First United Methodist Church.

The funeral service is scheduled for Saturday, October 26, at the same location in Ripley, Tennessee, starting at 1 p.m.

Young was a medical student at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center. She was participating in a walk for the American Cancer Society at Shelby Farms when she was allegedly shot and killed by her ex-boyfriend, Jackson Hopper, on October 19.

In her obituary, Young was remembered as a passionate individual who brought light and joy to those around her.

"To know her was to love her. Though her passing has affected many in the community, she wouldn’t want us to dwell on this pain. In a farewell to her Chi O sorority sisters, she wrote,

'In the words of Winnie the Pooh, ‘How lucky I am to have something that makes saying goodbye so hard.’ As I take this next step in my journey, I carry with me the love, lessons and laughter that life has given me. So, this isn’t just a goodbye, it’s a thank you. Thank you for the joy, the support, for being my home away from home.'"

Ellie is survived by her parents, sister and brother-in-law, grandparents, aunts and uncles, as well as countless friends and family.
