Garbage piling up in Cordova neighborhood, residents want answers from city leaders

Neighbors in the Woodchase subdivision said they have dealt with garbage collection issues for years.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. —

Garbage is piling up in a Cordova neighborhood after months without trash pick-up.

In April 2022, we told you about the Woodchase subdivision, where curbside bulk and debris was being ignored by the City of Memphis. Nearly two years later, and neighbors are frustrated and searching for answers once again.

Patsy Mayre said if it’s not the garbage, it’s the recycling that’s being skipped.

"We do try to keep our properties up here, and it's very discouraging to see that it's not picked up when it should be,” said Mayre.

Neighbors had called ABC24 for help back in 2022 because they had gone months with inconsistent garbage pickup. Sarah Hagler said this has become an ongoing issue.

"Each week that the curbside collection isn't happening, I put in a request in 311. It's acknowledged by the city, and then it's promptly deleted,” said Hagler.

Neighbors said garbage gets picked up on some streets and ignored on others. They said the debris is not only an eye-sore, but it's also causing other issues.

"It's caused standing water and irrigation to not work and drainage, and also our postal deliveries aren't able to occur because mailboxes are starting to be blocked,” said Hagler.

Neighbors want answers and want to make sure solid waste stays on a consistent schedule.

"I am hoping that they will be on top of the situation and they will see to it that all parts of the city are covered equally,” said Mayre.

A spokesperson for the City of Memphis told ABC24 they’re still investigating why the subdivision is experiencing service interruptions, but said crews will be there to pick up on Wednesday.
