The future of the Germantown Country Club is up in the air Thursday, the same day golfers teed off there for the last time.
It’s closing after nearly fifty years. The club sits on nearly 180 acres between Wolf River and Farmington boulevards.
While members are disappointed, they say they will move on.
Germantown Country Club member Sylvia Benton started playing there in the 70s.
The 78-year-old has played golf with her girl gang of golfers every Wednesday morning for years. Dozens of Germantown Country Club members, like Benton, spent Thursday getting in their last round.
“We have had some fabulous times. We’re very close. And very sad,” said Benton.
Club member Dustin Baker said, “It’s bittersweet you know. Loved the food. Loved the course.”
As far as what will happen to the $1.6 million property, it’s all speculation right now.
Justin Wagner, owner of Germantown Hardware, has been a GCC member for nearly 30 years. He says the 40 members of his golf group have moved on, even though they didn’t want to. Wagner says a lot of members have joined Windyke, Ridgeway, or Memphis National.
The city of Germantown is considering buying the country club.
“It’s sad. I hope it ends up a golf course again, because you never know,” said Wagner.
