Germantown officials say most services restored after Friday's cybersecurity attack

Officials said the details and nature of the attack are part of an ongoing criminal investigation in which the FBI has joined.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Germantown officials said city phone lines are restored and public safety services are operating normally after it was hit Friday morning by a “malicious cybersecurity incident."

City leaders said they first learned of the disruption just before 6 a.m. Friday, Feb. 2, 2024. They said a cybersecurity malware system was "triggered to limit damage." Officials said the details and nature of this attack are part of an ongoing criminal investigation in which the FBI has joined.

On Monday, the city said impacts on service delivery are "minimal" and most operations have resumed, including sanitation collection. Officials said Wi-Fi at City facilities, including the Germantown Community Library and the Germantown Athletic Club, is temporarily unavailable.

The City said the attack was contained and impacted a "limited number of internal, on-site servers." They said those servers were isolated and network computers were shut down. Information Technology (IT) staff worked over the weekend to limit the impact and restore systems. The city said the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) is assisting with the ongoing criminal investigation.

"Initial assessments indicate that data related to finance and utilities has not been compromised. This includes any customer payment information," the city said in a news release Monday.
