MEMPHIS, Tenn — The family of Gershun Freeman is suing Shelby County for $100 million dollars, new documents filed on Saturday in a federal civil lawsuit over his death revealed.
The complaint also alleges that some of the officers indicted for their role in Freeman's death are still working at the Shelby County jail, even as an ongoing criminal case plays out against them.
All of the officers appeared in court for the first time on Friday, Oct. 27.
The 33-year-old died while in custody at 201 poplar last year in October. Video released in March shows Freeman naked as several corrections officers beat and restrain him.
The last minutes of the video show Freeman being restrained while handcuffed, lying face down on the jail floor. One officer is seen kneeling on Freeman's back for nearly four minutes until Freeman's body goes limp.
The nine officers are due back in court Dec. 1. All of them are reportedly on administrative leave.
