The Mississippi Department of Public Safety is improving its driver’s license system, in what it calls “the most aggressive overhaul in agency history.” But the overhaul revealed a glitch, which meant some motorists received a renewed license for less than the full four year term.
The glitch would not allow early license renewal online of through kiosks. To fix the problem, those with incorrect licenses will get a letter with instructions on how to get a new license that covers the full four year term.
The five-year modernization of the license system in Mississippi is set to be completed by the end of the year. The goal is to reduce wait times and increase efficiency. New licenses and identification cards will also have enhanced features to protect your personal information.
“The objective of the system upgrades is better customer service,” said Public Safety Commissioner Albert Santa Cruz. “We have developed a solution to satisfy the issue with the incorrect licenses and are working on a long-term resolution of the software glitch.”
The department says until the glitch is permanently fixed, you should only renew on your actual birthdate if renewing online or at a kiosk.
“We are committed to making lasting improvements to our driver’s license system,” said Driver Service Bureau Director Major Kenneth Brown. “We will continue to work diligently to enhance customer satisfaction and reduce wait times in all 51 stations around the state.”
