Hack-a-thon teaches computer science skills to nearly 100 students

More than 90 students showed up Sunday at the University of Memphis to put their fingers to the keyboard for a hack-a-thon.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (localmemphis.com) – More than90 students showed up Sunday at the University of Memphis to put their fingersto the keyboard for a hack-a-thon.

CodeCrew is a non-profit computer scienceeducation organization. The group engaged participants in a weekend of trackingvarious aspects of school health and how to creatively address it.

Sunday was the finale of the two-day event.Students were placed on teams and faced the challenge of building mobile appsthat promote healthy lifestyles.

“Firstly, it’s important because thesekids are showcasing and demonstrating the tech skills that they’ve learned, andmany of them are, this is actually their first time doing a CodeCrew event, sothey’re learning about these tech skills even now, the first time this weekend.But, the second reason is so that they can see themselves as being civicallyengaged and not have to wait until adulthood to do that,” said CodeCrewco-founder Meka Egwuekwe said.

Winners were awarded with various prizes,including laptops and Amazon Echos. This was the 5th year for the hack-a-thon,and organizers say this was the biggest one yet.
