Students at Hamilton Middle School took a hands-on approach with their science lesson Wednesday. The school celebrated 100 big green learning gardens.
The goal was to teach the students how to work together, all while planting seeds to grow fresh fruit and vegetables for the local community.
Teachers say it’s important for the students to understand where their food comes from.
“That’s the good thing about it. They didn’t have any experience, so a lot of them just go to the grocery store and they don’t know that that fruit, or that cucumber, that potato, it comes from somewhere,” says 6th grade science teacher Darryl Wesley. “So to have a hands-on look and really dive into it is a good experience for them.”
Plants they will harvest this spring include carrots, beets, squash, and cilantro.
