The worst of an approaching storm in the Memphis area happens to fall on a holiday Monday, as Martin Luther King Jr. Day calls on citizens to do good deeds and give back to the community.
Still, there are volunteer opportunities for those who want to give back to Memphis — before the storm gets here. For those that want to make a difference but also stay warm, here are some MLK-day themed events during the weekend in the Memphis area:
'Care Like King' Health & Wellness Day
Hosted by Volunteer Memphis, various days of service during the week have been organized in order to encourage Memphis to "care like King." There are two locations that Volunteer Memphis is looking for help at on Saturday.
The first is the Orange Mound Community Center at 2572 Park Avenue from 8:30 to 12:30 p.m.
Then, help is needed over at the Hollywood Community Center, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. They're specifically looking for bilingual volunteers at this location and time.
MLK 'Day of Service Health Fair' at the YMCA
Saturday at the Ric Nuber YMCA from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. a "Health Fair" honoring Dr. King is being presented by the Memphis Chapter of Jack and Jill of America, Inc.
Speakers from Le Bonheur Healthcare are said to be featured as guests can also participate in workouts lead by YMCA health experts.
Even those that don't get out this weekend because of the cold temperatures, they're always looking for volunteers year-round. The social media accounts of Volunteer Memphis and the Memphis Chapter of Jack and Jill are both great places to stay updated about opportunities to help the community.
