Homeowners off Lamar and American Way don't want truck stop in neighborhood

A proposed new truck spot and gas station is causing conflict for people who live in a neighborhood behind the purposed site where there is currently a hotel.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Some homeowners who live near the intersection of Lamar Avenue and American Way are furious because of a proposed plan to build yet another truck stop on Lamar.

The proposed project is a RaceTrac Travel Center truck stop in place of where Garden Inn and Suites is located at the intersection of Lamar and American Way.

The plan has been in the works for months, but homeowners believe their property value will decrease if a truck stop is built near them.

A woman who has lived in the neighborhood for more than 20 years said she believes she is experiencing health conditions because of the truck traffic and said she doesn’t want another truck stop in her backyard.

“It’s going to get worse if they put a truck stop right here by us because I already have asthma, and I’ve got a son and he has asthma," the woman said.

Last month, she and her other neighbors were mailed a notice of public hearing from the City of Memphis.

It said they received the notice because they live on property that is near the site of a development application to be considered at an upcoming public hearing.

While the plan has not yet been approved by the City of Memphis, the woman said she plans to attend Thursday’s public hearing and will cite public safety and health concerns as her reasons why the property should not be turned into yet another truck stop.
