Homeowners say the illegal dumping of trash near their Oakhaven neighborhood needs to stop

Homeowners in one Memphis neighborhood say they are fed up with the illegal dumping of trash near their neighborhood and say it needs to stop.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Illegal dumping has been a persistent problem throughout Memphis and Shelby County for many years.

We took a closer look at another area that's become a real eyesore and desperately needs a permanent cleanup, according to local homeowners.

Those living near the area of Tchulahoma Road and East Raines Road said they're living near a mountain of trash that's been worse - and other times better - but needs to be cleaned up immediately.

Dawn Clark has lived in the area of Tchulahoma and Raines for nearly 20 years and says the illegal dumping has always been the norm

“Seems like there should be something that can be done,” Clark said.

From soda cans to old books, bags of garbage and furniture, even mattresses and chairs, it's the definition of an illegal dump.

Clark says, “It’s disgusting, I ride around with litter in my car until I can get to a place to put it out.”

And if all this garbage isn’t enough there's a large pothole directly in the middle of the inside lane on Raines Road.

We called the city of Memphis and explained to them what our crews were seeing, describing the dump in great detail By the next morning when our cameras made the scene, the dump was cleared.

However, there was one issue. We shot this story one week ago. As of Tuesday, someone decided to toss their trash again.

So what’s the solution?

The City of Memphis said they will continue to clean up and hopefully people will stop tossing their trash on Raines near Tchulahoma.

Clark says, “The taxpayer money should be used to clean up peoples mess. We need to have more respect for our community."

The City of Memphis also said they are working to fill the hole as soon as possible.
