MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The Memphis Fire Department was on the scene of a house fire in Midtown that left a man dead Friday morning.
Fire crews responded to the fire in the 1700 block of Tutwiler Avenue, near North Evergreen Street.
The department said the man was taken to the Regional One Hospital's Burn Unit in critical condition, but later was pronounced dead.
People are asked to avoid the area.
Memphis Fire said the fire started in a rear bedroom from "smoking materials," and caused around $80,000 in damage to the house.
