SHELBY CO., Tenn. (localmemphis.com) – With nearly a week until election night, there’s a new twist in the sales tax referendum on the ballot. In a memo released by Shelby County Commissioner Edmund Ford, Jr., if the measure passes, the county should claim its “fair share” of the money.
The referendum was placed on the ballot to restore benefits for Memphis first responders and bring back the pension. But Ford said state law would allow the county to lay claim to half of that money. The referendum could raise $50 million to $54 million.
