For the third time in less than four years, a FedEx worker is killed while on the job at the Memphis FedEx hub.
Memphis Police were called to the Memphis FedEx hub a little after 12:30 Thursday morning for an accidental injury and found a FedEx employee dead.
Authorities said the woman was found under a motorized conveyor belt system and police said she was assigned to unload an airplane.
Now, a state investigation is underway to find out exactly how the woman died at the fed-ex hub.
The employee’s death follows two FedEx workers killed while working at the FedEx hub in recent years.
Nearly two years ago to the day Thursday, 39-year-old Christopher Higginbottom died after a tug trailer struck a parked trailer and a 19-year-old FedEx worker died in July 2014 after being crushed under the back of a loader.
In a statement, responding to Thursday’s worker death, a FedEx spokesperson said, “Words cannot convey the sadness we feel over the loss of our team member in an accident at the Memphis hub. Our prayers are with our colleague’s family, friends, and co-workers. We are cooperating with authorities in their investigation.”
Scott Brockman, president and CEO of the airport added, “We at the Memphis International Airport are deeply saddened by the news of the fatal accident that occurred at the FedEx hub early this morning. Our hearts go out to this employee’s family, friends and co-workers.”
Local 24 is told the state investigation into the FedEx employee’s death usually takes eight to ten weeks to complete and likely will include interviews with other FedEx workers and a review of company protocol and procedures.
