MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The Shelby County District Attorney's office has filed a notice of transfer to charge a 16-year-old boy as an adult following a deadly wreck in Hickory Hill that left three people dead and several more hurt.
The teen is facing multiple charges, which include three counts of vehicular homicide.
A spokesperson with the Shelby County District Attorney’s Office told ABC24 Tuesday they would file the motion to charge the teen as an adult due to the "gravity of the crime." The D.A. posted the notice of transfer was filed Wednesday, Aug. 28.
According to the Memphis Police Department, at 9:47 p.m. on Tuesday, August 20, officers tried to pull over a car in the area near Getwell Road and Cottonwood Road. That driver refused to stop.
From the information gathered so far, MPD believes the officers lost the car.
Later, other officers saw the car near Kirby Parkway and E. Raines Road where police said the driver ran a red light, causing a five-car crash.
ABC24 crews confirmed several police cars and the fire department were on the scene, and officials blocked off some the surrounding streets areas. Our crews also saw a burned car and severe damage to other cars.
MPD said two women were pronounced dead on the scene. The driver of the suspect car, a 16-year-old boy, was taken to the hospital in non-critical condition. Another woman died after being taken to the hospital in critical condition. MPD said two other women, a man and two children — a 2-year-old and 17-year-old — were taken to the hospital in non-critical condition.
MPD said no officers were hurt.
