MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A man is dead and another in critical condition Tuesday after Memphis Police said a police chase led to a crash in Hickory Hill.
MPD said their officers responded to the area of Shelby Drive and Riverdale Road around 1:17 p.m. Tuesday, where witnesses said they saw a man firing shots at a car. It was later found this man was shooting at his former partner and another man, with a four-year-old child in the car.
MPD and Shelby County Sheriff's deputies found the man in another car in the area of Winchester Road and chased him to Raines Road and Kirby Parkway, where Memphis Police said the man ran a red light and crashed into two other cars.
The suspect was taken to Regional One Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. Another man in one of the cars hit was taken to Regional One in critical condition, and Memphis Police said he is now stable.
Memphis Police have the intersection of Raines Road and Kirby Parkway completely shut down as they investigate, and mentioned they found a handgun with a fully automatic switch near the suspect's car.
MPD said they believe the suspect was involved in a domestic violence situation and felt the chase was necessary.
"This would be what we would call a 'violent fleeing felon' - someone who had probably three counts of aggravated assault, with those three people in the vehicle...so it is absolutely in line with our pursuit policy," MPD Deputy Chief Samuel Hines said.
Avoid the area for now.
