Not traveling for Labor Day? Here are some ways you can enjoy the holiday weekend in Memphis

There are events all over the Bluff City this weekend for people of all ages.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The TSA is prepared to screen 17 million Americans as their busiest Labor Day travel period runs Thursday, Aug. 29, through Wednesday, Sept. 4. 

For those planning to stay in the Mid-South, there are plenty of fun activities and events in Memphis this weekend.

Delta Fair & Music Festival

The Delta Fair and Music Festival is at the Agricenter International, 7777 Walnut Grove Rd, Memphis, TN 38120. The fair will run from Friday, Aug. 30 through Sept. 8.

Along with the rides, food and games, there will also be a petting zoo plus other activities.

Admission is $10 for kids ages 5-12 and seniors 65 and up and is free for kids under 4. It costs $15 everyone else. 

Free Concerts at the Overton Park Shell

As part of the 2024 Orion Free Concert Series, there will be several performances at the Overton Park Shell during Labor Day weekend.

On Friday, Aug, 30, bassist Mononeon will take the stage from 7p.m. to 9 p.m.

On Saturday, the free Memphis Power Pop Festival, was originally being held at the Overton Park Shell but has now moved to Minglewood Hall at 1555 Madison due to extreme weather conditions. 

This is still a free show! You can bring a chair, however no outside food or drink is allowed. Food and beverages available for purchase inside.

Folk artist Abe Partridge will take the stage from 5:20p.m. to 5:40 p.m. Afterwards The Sonny Wilsons will perform until 6:30 p.m. Lastly, Matthew Sweet will close out, with his set starting at 7p.m.

Healthier 901 Fest

The 2nd Annual Healthier 901 Fest is on Sat., Aug. 31 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Shelby Farms Park. 

The free, family event features the following activities: 

  • Cooking demos by celebrity chefs
  • Surprise sponsor giveaways 
  • Live music 
  • Healthy food trucks. 
  • A ‘Find Your Fit Zone’ to kickstart your fitness journey 
  • A family zone

City of Memphis Official 901 Day Celebration

One of the biggest events this weekend will be on Beale street. On Sunday, you can celebrate all things Memphis at the city's official 901 Day Celebration. L.Y.E Academy Owner and event organizer Ladia Yates said extra law enforcement will be downtown to help keep the family friendly event safe.

"We have multiple security companies and MPD involved in this event," said Yates. "The main stage will be set up on Beale and Fourth Street."

Here are some things you can expect to see at the free event:

  • Memphis Jookin' battles
  • DJ battles
  • Live paintings
  • Vendors
  • Free giveaways
  • A flash mob
  • A fashion show
  • A poetry slam
  • A youth talent showcase

The event is from 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

River City Jazz and Music Fest

The 6th annual River City Jazz and Music Fest is on Sunday, Sept. 1 at the Cannon Center for Performing Arts in Downtown Memphis. 

Saxophonist Najee, Avery Sunshine, Pieces of a Dream and Karyn White will hit the stage. 

The festival starts at 6:30 pm. Tickets start at around $82.

Beale Street Cigar Fest

The 9th Annual Beale Street Cigar Festival will run Friday, Aug. 30 to Sunday, Sept. 1 at Handy Park in Downtown Memphis. 

The event is from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. on Friday and admission will be free.

On Saturday it's from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. and on Sunday, it runs from 3 p.m. to 10 p.m. Tickets start at $25.
