Laid off teacher says his car was towed while looking for another job in Midtown

Nathan Hayes was unable to pay the towing fees after losing his job in May.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — When 60-year-old Nathan Hayes from Memphis was down on his luck after his car was towed last week, he didn’t know what to do.

Hayes lost his job at Memphis Merrit Academy back in May.

“I’ve been a teacher for about 11 years. I love teaching I love interacting with young people,” Hayes said. “I’m doing the best I can."

Looking for answers, he reached out to ABC24 for help.

Hayes also found it very difficult to find gainful employment, so he went to the American Job Center in Midtown off Poplar Avenue.

“I parked in the lot that’s across from the apartments. I come out... no car. I’m trying to figure out what’s going on,” Hayes said.

Despite not seeing any 'no parking' signs and not knowing the parking lot he parked in was a part of an adjacent apartment complex, his red Honda Accord was towed a week ago.

The payoff fee to get his Honda home was $225, but he didn't have the money. On top of that, PB & J Towing charges $30 for each day the vehicle sits in the lot

“7 times 30 would be 210… Might be about four or $500 now,” Hayes said.

ABC24 called PB & J Towing and shared Hayes' story. After speaking with one of the company’s executive directors, they wiped his debt clean.

“Thank you. Thank PB & J, thank you, Scott Madaus, thank ABC, thank God. Thank Memphis," he said.

Hayes will pick up his car free and clear on Tuesday.
