Local Good News: Mom & Daughter Graduate From U of M

A mother and daughter recently walked down the aisle together.  But, it wasn’t for a wedding.  This walk had everything to do with education. And, it’s local good news.

Renee and Valisa Harris are taking a stroll down this hallway as mother and daughter, “besties” really.

But, December 11th, they took another walk together.  This time as U of M graduates.

“My mom is my best friend, so this whole time throughout my whole college experience, she was a student too,” said U of M Graduate Valisa Harris.

Twenty (20) years ago, Renee was a student at the University of Memphis.  But, she chose family over her education and walked away from college.

“A full-time wife and mom, a mother of three, and I just kinda wanted to be there for the children and be the mom and the wife.  And once my daughter graduated from Arlington High School I said I’m going to go back and finish what I started,” said U of M Graduate Renee Harris.

So, she went back to college when her daughter Valisa did.  And, the two even took a class together.

“We took Judaic studies, and it was fun because I got to read about the bible and stuff.  And, we come from a Christian background so it was fun to do that with my mom,” said Valisa.  “I feel relieved, excited, and I’m just – gosh – thankful for the experience.”

“It was indescribable how good God was to me.  He said if you make one step, I’ll make two,” said Renee.

Renee has this message for any parent who chose family over education in the past.  “Go back to school”.

“Pray about it, believe that you can do it and it can be done,” said Renee.

Renee says it’s time for you to step back into your destiny.  And that’s local good news.
