Several Desoto County deputies on paid leave following deadly deputy-involved shooting

DESOTO COUNTY, Miss. (localmemphis.com) – UPDATED: The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation is investigating following a deputy-involved shooting in DeSoto County Sunday night.

The DSCO says it happenedon Highway 78 at the Marshall County line. DesotoCount District Attorney John Champion says it all started about 10:00 p.m. inSouthaven, when a man went into Longhorn’s and had a confrontation with somepeople inside. Champion says the man was asked to leave, and shots were firedin the parking lot.

Champion saysthe man displayed a weapon at Fazoli’s, and an alert went out for all DeSotoCounty deputies. He said the same man then also went into an Olive Branch Applebee’s,and another shot was fired.

The man’svehicle was spotted on US78, and Champion says the car was moved onto median. Hesays the man refused to leave car, and then a shot was fired and shots werereturned by officers. The man was killed.

Championsays the man killed, whose name has not been released, was a 76-years-old veteranfrom Marshall County. The DA says a family member of victim believes hehad history of mental illness.

Championsays seven deputies fired shots, and all are on paid leave as the investigationcontinues. He expects the investigation to be done by end of January, when MBIwill present the findings to the DA.
