The Tennessee Three are no longer expected to speak at the DNC

Justin J. Pearson, Gloria Johnson and Justin Jones had been expected to speak at the Democratic National Convention on Thursday, August 22.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The Tennessee House Democratic Caucus Press Secretary said early Thursday evening the Tennessee Three are no longer expected to speak at the Democratic National Convention (DNC).

He couldn't confirm why State Representative Justin J. Pearson (Shelby County-D), alongside Reps. Gloria Johnson (Knoxville-D) and Justin Jones (Nashville-D), may be bumped from the schedule for the fourth night of the DNC in Chicago.

The three representatives were expected to appear on stage together, giving remarks as part of the 'The Tennessee Three,' alongside national and local democrats from all over the nation.

“The DNC is a tremendous platform. I am humbled and honored to be asked to deliver remarks during this phenomenally historic time in American politics,” Pearson said.

Pearson is also a Tennessee delegate from Shelby County and he represented the state during roll call, announcing Tennessee's delegates support for Kamala Harris.

“I am proud to cast my vote at the DNC to officially certify the first woman of color to be the Democratic Party nominee for President—Vice President Kamala Harris. Democracy, justice and the soul of our nation are at stake in this election and a vote for Vice President Harris for President and Gov. Tim Walz for Vice President is a vote for democracy, justice and a brighter future for America,” Pearson said. “There is no better leader for our country.”

Vice President Kamala Harris had previously met with The Tennessee Three in Nashville, back in April of 2023.

The Tennessee Three is the name given to Pearson, Johnson, and Jones after the three representatives protested against Republican inaction on gun violence, following a school shooting in a Nashville elementary school that killed six people, including three children. After the protests, Pearson and Jones were expelled from the State House, but were later reinstated and voted back into office. Johnson was not voted to be expelled by a single vote.

Speeches and performances for the fourth night of the DNC will start at 5:30 p.m., it will be available to stream at ABC24+.
