A mother is recovering after Millington police say her child got a hold of a gun and accidentally shot her.

It all happened during a University of Memphis baseball game where several thousand were inside USA Stadium Tuesday night.

The Millington Police Chief said the child found a gun in a car and then accidentally shot his mom inside the stadium.

Millington Police say the child who fired the gun was between 8 and 10 years old. The Millington Elementary student found the gun in an antique World War II car on display. Dunbar says it was unsecured.

Police say he then accidentally shot his mother inside of the stadium just before 6:30 pm.

The University of Memphis baseball team was playing UT Martin in the annual Babe Howard Classic.

The injured mother was rushed to the hospital and is now stable.

“The juvenile believed it was a toy gun. He picked the gun up pulled the trigger and accidentally shot his mother. Everybody’s got a right to carry if they’ve got a carry permit, but you need to use common sense about securing your weapons,” said Millington Police Chief Mark Dunbar.

Both teams agreed to suspend the game after the shooting. The owner of the car is detained, and charges are possible.
