MEMPHIS – A 22-year-old man was convicted Thursday of second-degree murder stemming from the shooting death of an opponent in a basketball game in July of last year, said Shelby County Dist. Atty. Gen. Amy Weirich.
Defendant Ronald Jones remains in custody and will be sentenced next month by Criminal Court Judge James Lammey Jr.
Vicdarrius Pollard, 18, died of multiple gunshot wounds on July 24 last year at the LA Fitness Center near Winchester Road and Bill Morris Parkway in southeast Memphis.
Witnesses said Jones became angry at Pollard over a foul during a basketball game, left the court and retrieved a gun from his car. Jones then continued the argument on the court, pulled the gun from his pocket and shot Pollard six times.
The case was handled by Asst. Dist. Attys. Glen Baity and Bryce Phillips.
