Man riding bike across the U.S. to raise awareness for mental health and suicide prevention

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (localmemphis.com) – A man riding a bike across the contiguous 48 states to raise awareness for mental health and suicide prevention rode through Memphis this week.

Daniel Hurd is about halfway through his 3-year, 25,000-mile journey.

Hurd lives with long-term depression, and following his third suicide attempt, he dug deep to remember which moments in life were his happiest. He found those moments were on the open road and with his fellow veterans, so he drew a map of where his friends lived and sights he wanted to see.

“Part of what I’m doing is I’m doing it with no savings to show people that are dealing with daily struggles and financial struggles that we can survive anything with nothing. On top of that, to show all people there are still a lot of good people in the world still that are willing to help you regardless of what your situation is and even if they don’t know you directly and my journey is proof of that,” Hurd said.

In the more than 700 hours spent on the seat of his bike, Hurd has helped nine people turn from suicide to seek help by simply telling his story.
