No suspects arrested 5 months after Orange Mound Park shooting

Two were killed and seven others were injured in the mass shooting in Orange Mound Park in Memphis on Saturday, April 20, 2024.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Today marks five months after at least two shooters opened fire into a crowd of over 300 people at an unsanctioned block party in Orange Mound Park.

As the community continues to heal, they are demanding answers.

LaTonia Blankenship lives near the park and remembers the chaos that erupted after the shooting.

"You didn't know where the gunfire was coming from,” Blankenship said. “I saw the ambulance, the police, the kids running and consoling each other."

Two people were killed and seven others were injured. All of the victims were between the ages of 17 and 29.

"I actually knew the young man that passed away," Blankenship said. "You should be able to go to a park, enjoy yourself and leave."

Now, five months later, no suspects are in custody. Blankenship said some neighbors are still on edge and calling for justice.

"People are still scared. I want them to find those people."

Since then, organizations like Orange Mound Outreach Ministries have stepped up. Reverend Reginald Tucker, founder and pastor of Orange Mound Outreach Ministries, said they have helped some of the kids in the neighborhood cope with the incident.

"When that shooting happened, I had quite a few kids who were there," Rev. Tucker said.

His focus is creating a positive environment to be in after school.

"We've got to show these kids how to really be and how to solve problems."

When asked if there were any updates in this case, a Memphis Police Department spokesperson said it is still an ongoing investigation.

There is still a $25,000 reward for information leading to the shooters.
